Crafted with care
The care required to produce exceptional Kenya coffee consistently begins long before harvest. It starts in the pruning, the picking, the sorting, and the countless small decisions that never make it onto a bag label but shape every cup. At Rianjagi, those decisions are overwhelmingly made by women whose devotion has helped establish the factory’s reputation for quality year after year.
The wet mill itself reflects the same thoughtful approach. An eco-pulper dramatically reduces water usage during processing while maintaining the meticulous standards that define Kenya’s celebrated washed coffees. It’s proof that innovation doesn’t have to come at the expense of tradition; it can preserve both quality and the land that makes coffees like this possible.
Rianjagi washing station
Founded in 1976, Rianjagi is the heart of a cooperative representing more than 2,500 smallholder farmers, most of whom tend tiny family plots no larger than half an acre. These aren’t monoculture farms chasing yield. They’re living ecosystems in which coffee grows alongside bananas, avocados, beans, potatoes, mangoes, macadamia, and tea, creating a landscape that’s as resilient as it is beautiful.
It’s floral. It’s electric. It’s wildly refreshing like drinking sunshine that accidentally sauntered through a botanical garden.
One detail stood out immediately when we learned more about Rianjagi: the majority of the cooperative are women.
That isn’t just a statistic. It’s the lifeline of this coffee. We’re honored to share their work with you.
